A polyp is an abnormal growth of tissue projecting from a mucous membrane. If it is attached to the surface by a narrow elongated stalk, it is said to be pedunculated. If no stalk is present, it is said to be sessile. Polyps are commonly found in the colon, stomach, nose, sinus(es), urinary bladder and uterus. They may also occur elsewhere in the body where mucous membranes exist like the cervix  and small intestine.

Polypen sind makroskopisch sichtbare, meist gestielte Ausstülpungen der Mukosa (Schleimhaut). Das medizinische Wort Polyp ist rein deskriptiv (z. B. Nasenschleimhautpolyp – entzündlich; Dickdarmpolyp – neoplastisch) und sagt weder etwas über die Ätiologie noch etwas über die Dignität aus, d. h. ein neoplastischer Polyp kann sowohl gut- als auch bösartig sein. Die Differenzierung kann nur feingeweblich nach Abtragung erfolgen.

En médecine, un polype est une tumeur bénigne se développant sur les muqueuses. Les polypes se retrouvent plus fréquemment sur les muqueuses du colon du rectum, de l'utérus. Certains sont plats, ce sont des polypes sessiles, d'autres possèdent un pied plus ou moins long ce sont des polypes pédiculés. La présence de nombreux polypes sur une même muqueuse est appelée polypose. Les polypes de la muqueuse nasale peuvent être responsables d'une obstruction nasale plus ou moins gênante. L'association d'un asthme, d'une polypose nasale et d'une allergie à l'aspirine est dénommée triade de Widal. Devant la présence de nombreux polypes nasaux, une intolérance à l'aspirine doit être recherchée, car toute prise d'aspirine peut entraîner un asthme grave.

En polyp är en onormal vävnadstillväxt utgående från en slemhinna. Polyper kan förekomma i näsan, tjocktarmen, urinblåsan och alla andra organ i kroppen som har en slemhinneyta. Är en polyp neoplastisk så kan den vara elakartad, malign. Om polypen ej är neoplastisk kan den däremot inte vara elakartad. Ordet neoplasi i sig betyder "nybildning av vävnad."
