Realpolitik (German: real ("realistic", "practical" or "actual") and Politik ("politics") refers to politics or diplomacy based primarily on practical considerations, rather than ideological notions. The term realpolitik is often used pejoratively to imply politics that are coercive, amoral, or Machiavellian.

Le terme de realpolitik (allemand : politique réaliste), désigne une politique qui privilégie uniquement l'efficacité et les résultats "affichables" : à ce titre, les statistiques et les résultats dits "concrets" ont le primat absolu. C'est également une politique qui ne se soucie pas des principes éthiques. On pourrait la désigner comme le cynisme politique.

Der Begriff Politik wird aus dem griechischen Begriff Polis für Stadt oder Gemeinschaft abgeleitet. Er bezeichnet ganz allgemein ein vorausberechnendes, innerhalb der Gesellschaft auf ein bestimmtes Ziel gerichtetes Verhalten. Allerdings gibt es letztlich bis heute keine Einigkeit darüber, ob Macht, Konflikt, Herrschaft, Ordnung oder Friede die Hauptkategorie von Politik ausmachen.
