More specifically, point of sale often refers to the hardware and software used for checkouts -- the equivalent of an electronic cash register. Point of sale systems are used in restaurants, hotels, stadiums, and casinos, as well as almost any type of retail establishment.

The BancNet (BN) Point-Of-Sale System is a local PIN-based electronic funds transfer (EFTPOS) payments solution operated by BancNet on behalf of the member banks and China UnionPay (CUP). The BN POS System allows merchants to accept the ATM cards of any active BancNet member bank as payment for goods or services and obliges BN to settle the transaction as early as the following banking day through a direct deposit to a settlement account with any member bank. Acceptance of CUP cards is presently limited to SM Prime Holdings, Inc.'s Department Store, Supermarket, Hypermarket, Super Sale, Watson's, Sports Central, SM Appliance, Toy Kingdom, and select Surplus Stores.

Kassenarbeitsplatz oder Warenzellenkassenstand ist die Weiterentwicklung der Verkaufstheke der modernen Selbstbedienungs-Supermärkte - der sog. Verkaufsort oder Point of Sale - an dem der Kunde die im Laden eingesammelten Waren dem Kassierer zur Abrechnung übergibt und bezahlt.Der moderne Kassenarbeitsplatz ist zumeist für die Benutzung in Verbindung mit einem Einkaufswagen oder Einkaufskorb optimiert. Il POS (dall'inglese Point Of Sale, letteralmente punto di vendita) è un'apparecchiatura automatica diffusa in Italia e all'estero presso numerosi esercizi commerciali, mediante la quale è possibile effettuare, con l'utilizzo di una tessera magnetica o con microcircuito tipo Bancomat e la digitazione o meno di un codice d'identificazione personale o PIN, il pagamento dei beni acquistati o dei servizi ricevuti. L'apparecchiatura è collegata con il centro di elaborazione della banca o del gruppo di banche che offrono il servizio, affinché venga autorizzato ed effettuato il relativo addebito (in tempo reale o differito) sul conto corrente del soggetto abilitato e l'accredito sul conto dell'esercente.
