A pogrom is a form of violent riot, a mob attack directed against a minority group, and characterized by killings and destruction of their homes and properties, businesses, and religious centers. It originally and still typically refers to 19th- and 20th-century attacks on Jews, particularly in the Russian Empire.

Unter einem Pogrom (m., auch n.) versteht man eine gewaltsame, auch organisierte Massenausschreitung gegen Mitglieder religiöser, nationaler, ethnischer oder andersartig definierter Minderheiten oder Gruppen einer Bevölkerung, oft verbunden mit Plünderungen und Misshandlungen sowie Mord oder Genozid.

Le mot pogrom est d'origine russe, погром. Dans cette langue, il désigne un assaut, avec pillage et meurtres, d'une partie de la population contre une autre. Il est passé dans d'autres langues pour désigner un massacre de Juifs en Russie. Il désigne alors des actions violentes préméditées, menées à l'instigation des tsars par sa police, avec l'aide de populations locales contre les communautés Juives d'Europe. Les pogroms sont parfois menés contre d'autres minorités ethniques, comme les Tziganes. Ces actions s'accompagnent souvent de pillages mais aussi de destructions des biens personnels et communautaires et d'assassinats. Raul Hilberg définit le pogrom comme une brève explosion de violence d'une communauté contre un groupe juif qui vit au milieu d'elle même. Il a aussi existé des pogroms au Moyen-Orient.

Pogrom, från ryska погром (pogrom) - som härleds till громить (gromitj) - tygla någon, utsätta för våld, är en benämning på våldsamma och blodiga förföljelser av en folkgrupp, i synnerhet med avseende på förföljelser av judar.

Pogrom jest to tradycyjnie, w znaczeniu słownikowym tyle co „zadanie komuś klęski”, „rozgromienie” (np. wrogich wojsk), „unicestwienie”, „wybicie”. Współcześnie, za rosyjskim погром, słowo to jest używane najczęściej w odniesieniu do zbiorowych, brutalnych ataków na przedstawicieli mniejszości żydowskiej, a potocznie, zwłaszcza w języku publicystyki, bywa uogólniane jako wszelki grupowy akt przemocy skierowany przeciw jakiejś grupie narodowościowej lub religijnej, często połączony z niszczeniem własności jej członków (domów, miejsc pracy, miejsc kultu).
