Podgorica

Podgorica (Serbian Cyrillic: Подгорица, ) is the capital and largest city of Montenegro. It is located at , 44 m above sea level. A census in 2003 put city's population at 136,473. The favorable geographical position of Podgorica, at the confluence of the Ribnica and Morača rivers, on the meeting point of fertile Zeta plain and Bjelopavlići Valley has made the city an attractive location for settlement. The city is situated only a few dozen kilometers from both winter ski centers in the north and seaside resorts on Adriatic Sea.

Mit Ausnahme des Staatspräsidenten, der in Cetinje residiert, haben hier alle wichtigen Institutionen der Republik ihren Sitz. Podgorica hat 139.724 Einwohner (2004), eine Universität, mehrere Theater und ist Sitz der Montenegrinischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. Von 1946 bis 1992 hieß die Stadt Titograd. Der Name Podgorica bedeutet auf deutsch ungefähr unterhalb des Berges.

Wg danych spisu ludności z roku 2003, miasto liczy 136 473 mieszkańców, 22% ludności republiki. Dobre położenie geograficzne między rzekami Ribnicą i Moračą uczyniło miasto atrakcyjnym miejscem do zasiedlenia. Miasto znajduje się blisko ośrodków narciarskich w Górach Dynarskich oraz wybrzeża Morza Adriatyckiego.
