Pleistocene

The Pleistocene epoch    on the geologic timescale is the period from 1,808,000 to 11,550 years BP. The Pleistocene epoch had been intended to cover the world's recent period of repeated glaciations. The name pleistocene is derived from the Greek (pleistos "most") and (kainos "new"). The Pleistocene epoch follows the Pliocene epoch and is followed by the Holocene epoch. The Pleistocene is the third epoch of the Neogene period or 6th epoch of the Cenozoic Era. The end of the Pleistocene corresponds with the end of the Paleolithic age used in archaeology.The Pleistocene is divided into the Early Pleistocene, Middle Pleistocene and Late Pleistocene, and numerous faunal stages.

Le Pléistocène (du grec pleistos, nombreux, et kainos, récent) est la troisième époque du système Néogène. Il a débuté il y a 1,806 ± 0,005 million d'années et s'est terminé il y a 11 430 ± 130 ans BP. Il couvre la plupart des récentes glaciations incluant le Dryas récent qui interrompit momentanément la dernière déglaciation.

Das Pleistozän (früher auch Diluvium, manchmal auch Eiszeitalter genannt) bezeichnet in der Geologie die erdgeschichtliche Serie von vor etwa 1,8 Millionen Jahren bis vor 11.500 Jahren. Es ist die vorletzte Serie des Erdzeitalters  des Känozoikum (Erdneuzeit). Geprägt ist es vor allem durch den Wechsel von Kalt- und Warmzeiten. Nach Elbe-(Günz), Elster (Mindel)- und Saaleeiszeit (Riss) wird es am Ende der letzten Kaltzeit, der Weichsel-Kaltzeit (Norddeutschland), bzw. Würm-Kaltzeit (Alpenraum) vom Holozän abgelöst, der Serie, in der wir heute leben. Das Pleistozän ist die untere Serie des Quartärs.

Plejstocen - trzecia epoka neogenu, trwająca od 1,87 mln lat temu do początku holocenu (11 500 lat temu), zwana też epoką lodowcową, w której olbrzymie lodowce pokryły wielką część Europy, łącznie z Polską, a także inne obszary strefy umiarkowanej, a więc zachodnią Syberię, Amerykę Północną, Grenlandię, Ziemię Ognistą, Argentynę, Tasmanię. W tym samym czasie w strefie międzyzwrotnikowej występowały wzmożone opady.

Il Pleistocene è un'epoca geologica che ha inizio 1,8 milioni di anni fa e termina 11.000 anni fa.Il Pleistocene inferiore e medio corrisponde al periodo del paleolitico inferiore (Homo habilis e Homo erectus), mentre il Pleistocene superiore ai periodi del paleolitico medio e superiore (Homo neanderthalensis, Homo sapiens).
