The is a 32-bit video game console of the fifth generation. It was first released by Sony Computer Entertainment in December 1994. The original PlayStation was the first of the ubiquitous PlayStation series of console and hand-held game devices, which has included successor consoles and upgrades including the Net Yaroze (a special black PS with tools and instructions to program PS games and applications), PS one (a smaller version of the original), PocketStation (a handheld which enhances PS games and acts as a memory card), PlayStation 2, a revised, slimline PS2, PlayStation Portable (a handheld gaming console), PSX (Japan only) (a media center, DVR and DVD recorder based on the PS2), and PlayStation 3. By March 31 2005, the PlayStation and PS one had shipped a combined total of 102.49 million units, becoming the first video game console to ever reach the 100 million mark.

Die PlayStation (jap. Katakana: プレイステーション Romaji: Pureisuteeshon) ist eine Spielkonsole des Unternehmens Sony, welche 1994 erstmals verkauft und deren Herstellung 2006 nach elf Jahren Verkaufszeitraum endgültig eingestellt wurde. Mit Ken Kutaragi als Vorsitzendem der eigens dafür gegründeten Tochtergesellschaft Sony Computer Entertainment avancierte die PlayStation zur zweit-erfolgreichsten Konsole der neunziger Jahre (102 Millionen verkaufte Exemplare weltweit, nur übertroffen von Nintendos Game Boy und dem Nachfolger PlayStation 2), und stürzte im Bereich Heimkonsolen den einstigen Platzhirsch Nintendo vom Thron.

PlayStation (jap. プレイステーション, pureisutēshon; pol. StacjaGier) – 32-bitowa konsola do gier wideo, wyprodukowana w Japonii przez firmę Sony, zaprojektowana przez Kena Kutaragiego. Premierę systemu datuje się na 3 grudnia 1994 roku, kiedy to pierwsze egzemplarze trafiły na półki japońskich sklepów. Ponad pół roku później, 9 września 1995 roku, konsola ukazała się w Stanach Zjednoczonych, a 29 września tego samego roku – w Europie.Konsola ta była stworzona we współpracy z Nintendo – Sony miało dostarczyć im czytnik CD-Rom do ich konsoli oraz ogólnie pomóc przy architekturze systemu. Jednak z powodu różnicy zdań, w 1993 roku Sony samo zaczęło prace nad swoją konsolą, dodając literę X do jej nazwy – przy premierze systemu litera została usunięta, jednak skrót pozostał – PSX.

La è una console per videogiochi a 32 bit, presentata dalla Sony Computer Entertainment nel dicembre 1994. Oltre a permettere di giocare con titoli dedicati (su supporto CD-ROM), consente anche l'ascolto di CD audio. La console è stata così popolare da indurre a definire i giovani degli anni '90 come la Generazione PlayStation. Spesso si usa il termine PlayStation per riferirsi a tutte le recenti console di Sony, tuttavia per PlayStation, commercialmente, si dovrebbe intendere solo la prima versione della console. Ci si riferisce alla PlayStation anche con l'abbreviazione PSX, riprendendo il nome in codice usato durante la fase di sviluppo del sistema ovvero Play Station Xperimental.
