Formerly a winger with FC Metz, Pires blossomed into an excellent playmaker with Olympique de Marseille. He now seems set for a summer switch to Arsenal FC, and will be eager to impress his possible future employers with some dynamic displays at Euro 2000. Nimble and skilful with the ball at his feet. he played three matches in the 1998 FIFA World Cup, and also featured in the 1998/99 UEFA Cup Final. He can play behind the front two, but is more dangerous cutting in from the wings. Apparently he was moving to Madrid (with Real) in June 2000, but after Euro 2000 his transfer went down and he signed a contract with Arsenal.
