Piran

Saint Piran is the patron saint of Cornwall.Piran (Italian Pirano) is a town and municipality in southwestern Slovenia on the Adriatic coast along the Gulf of Piran. The municipality has 16,758 (2002) inhabitants and covers a 46.6 km² area. The town has 4,576 (2002) inhabitants on an 1 km² area. The municipality is bilingual, both Slovenian and Italian are official languages. It borders on the south with Croatia, on the north (on the sea) with Italy and on the east with the municipalities of Izola and Koper. The highest peak is 289 m high (Baretovec pri Padni). The municipality's festival is on October 15, which celebrates the foundation of the first naval detachment Koper in the year 1944. The municipality has an international airport and a marina.

Pirano o Pirano d'Istria (in sloveno Piran) è un comune di 16.758 abitanti della Slovenia sud-occidentale, sulla costa adriatica. Il centro del comune conta 4.576 abitanti (2002) su un'area di 1 km². Altri popolosi centri abitati sono i sobborghi di Portorose e Santa Lucia (o Lucia) accresciuti in epoca più moderna. Il comune è bilingue, sia lo Sloveno che l'Italiano sono lingue ufficiali. Pirano confina a sud, lungo l'omonimo Vallone (= baia) e il fiume Dragogna, con la Croazia, a nord (sul mare) con l'Italia e a est con i comuni di Isola d'Istria e Capodistria. La massima elevazione è a 289 m s.l.m. (Monte Mogolon/Baretovec pri Padni). La festa del comune cade il 15 ottobre e celebra la fondazione del primo "distaccamento navale Capodistria" nel 1944.
