Pinniped

Pinnipeds ("fin-feet", lit. "winged feet") are marine mammals belonging to the former biological suborder Pinnipedia (sometimes now a superfamily) of the order Carnivora. The pinnipeds now fall within the suborder Caniformia and comprise the families Odobenidae (walruses), Otariidae (eared seals, including sea lions and fur seals), and Phocidae (true seals). Recent molecular analysis reveals that the closest living relatives of the pinnipeds are the bears, which was already suspected for some time. An alternative hypothesis held that pinnipeds are polyphyletic, with the true seals derived from otterlike creatures and the walruses and eared seals from bearlike creatures, but the aforementioned molecular study established that the pinnipeds are indeed monophyletic (derived from a common ancestor).

Les Pinnipèdes formaient autrefois un sous-ordre de mammifères marins comprenant trois familles : les otaries, ou Otariidae, famille comprenant aussi les lions de mer. Cette famille se caractérise visuellement par un corps redressé (quand l'animal est à terre), en appui sur ses nageoire antérieures, et par des oreilles ayant un pavillon visible.Les morses, Odobenidae. Cette famille se caractérise visuellement par sa grande taille et ses imposantes défenses. Une seule espèce.Les phoques et éléphants de mer, ou Phocidae. Cette famille se caractérise visuellement par un corps totalement étalé (quand l'animal est à terre). Les nageoires antérieures sont en effet incapables de porter le corps. On note aussi l'absence de tout pavillon auditif, contrairement aux otaries.

Die Robben (Pinnipedia) sind eine Gruppe zum Wasserleben übergegangener Raubtiere (Carnivora). Der wissenschaftliche Name leitet sich aus dem Lateinischen von pinna, „Flosse“ und pes, „Fuß“ her, bedeutet also Flossenfüßer. Unter diesem Namen oder als Wasser-Raubtiere findet man sie manchmal auch in der Fachliteratur, am bekanntesten aber sind sie als Robben.

Zeeroofdieren (ook wel vinpotigen genoemd) zijn een informele groep binnen de roofdieren die de volgende drie families omvat:Oorrobben (Otariidae) (waartoe de zeeleeuwen en de zeeberen behoren)Walrussen (Odobenidae)Zeehonden (Phocidae) Vroeger werden ze wel tot een aparte onderorde of zelfs orde gerekend, Pinnipedia genaamd, maar nu is het algemeen aanvaard dat ze deel zijn van de onderorde Caniformia en dat de groep mogelijk zelfs het resultaat is van parallelle ontwikkelingen. Een theorie is dat de zeehonden een otterachtige voorouder hebben, terwijl de walrussen en oorrobben een beerachtige voorouder hebben.
