Phthiotis

Phthiotis (Greek, Modern: Φθιώτιδα - Fthiótida, Ancient/Katharevousa: Φθιώτις) is one of the prefectures of Greece. The capital is the city of Lamia. It is bordered by the Maliac Gulf to the east, Boeotia in the south, Phocis in the south, Aetolia-Acarnania in the southwest, Eurytania in the west, Karditsa in the north, Larissa in the north, and Magnesia in the northeast. The name dates back to ancient times. The modern prefecture was created during the Greek War of Independence of 1821 and was known as Phthiotis and Phocis until 1947 when the old southern part became the modern Phocis prefecture and the name changed to the modern-day Phthiotis.

Phthiotis ( , ) war die südlichste der vier Landschaften des alten Thessalien in Griechenland. Sie umfasste das Gebiet um das Othrysgebirge, zwischen dem Malischen und Pagasäischen Meerbusen und war in der Antike von den Hellenen, Myrmidonen (die Heimat des Achilleus) und Achäern bewohnt, welche später zusammen als Achäi Phthiotä bezeichnet wurden, daher auch die Landschaft selbst den Namen "Achaia" führt.

Fthiotyda (gr. klas. , gr. Φθιώτιδα) - kraina historyczna w Grecji, obecnie prefektura w regionie administracyjnym Grecja Środkowa ze stolicą w Lamii. Graniczy od północy z prefekturami Magnezja, Larisa i Karditsa w regionie administracyjnym Tesalia, od zachodu z prefekturą Eurytania z regionu Grecja Środkowa oraz z prefekturą Etolia i Akarnania (region Grecja Zachodnia), od południa z Fokidą i Beocją (Grecja Środkowa). Od wschodu prefektura ma dostęp do Morza Egejskiego poprzez Cieśninę Eubejską, oddzielającą stały ląd od wyspy Eubei. Współczesna prefektura Fthiotyda zajmuje powierzchnię 4,441 km², zamieszkuje ją 181,383 (stan z roku 2005).
