Photovoltaics, or PV for short, is a solar power technology that uses solar cells or solar photovoltaic arrays to convert light from the sun directly into electricity. Photovoltaics is also the field of study relating to this technology and there are many research institutes devoted to work on photovoltaics. The manufacture of photovoltaic cells has expanded dramatically in recent years. Total nominal 'peak power' of installed PV is currently over 5.6 GWp. Most of this consists of grid-tied electrical system. Such installations may be ground-mounted (and sometimes integrated with farming and grazing) or building integrated. Financial incentives, such as preferential feed-in tariffs for solar-generated electricity and net metering, have supported solar PV installations in many countries including Germany, Japan, and the United States.

L'énergie solaire photovoltaïque est une forme d'énergie renouvelable permettant de produire de l'électricité par transformation d'une partie du rayonnement solaire grâce à une cellule photovoltaïque. Plusieurs cellules sont reliées entre-elles sur un module solaire photovoltaïque. Plusieurs modules sont regroupés pour former une installation solaire chez un particulier ou dans une centrale solaire photovoltaïque. Cette installation peut-être isolée et fonctionner « en ilot » en chargeant des batteries et répondant à des besoins locaux, ou alimenter un réseau de distribution électrique.

Unter Photovoltaik oder Fotovoltaik versteht man die direkte Umwandlung von Strahlungsenergie, vornehmlich Sonnenenergie, in elektrische Energie. Sie ist seit 1958 zunächst in der Energieversorgung von Weltraumsatelliten mittels Solarzellen im Einsatz. Inzwischen wird sie zur Stromerzeugung auf der ganzen Welt eingesetzt und findet Anwendung auf Dachflächen, bei Parkscheinautomaten, an Schallschutzwänden oder auf Freiflächen. Der Name setzt sich aus den Bestandteilen Photos – das griechische Wort für Licht – und Volta – nach  Alessandro Volta, einem Pionier der Elektrotechnik – zusammen. Die Photovoltaik gilt als Teilbereich der umfassenderen  Solartechnik, die auch andere technische Nutzungen der Sonnenenergie einschließt.

Fotowoltaika - wytwarzanie prądu elektrycznego z promieniowania słonecznego przy wykorzystaniu zjawiska fotowoltaicznego. Fotowoltaika znajduje obecnie zastosowanie, mimo stosunkowo wysokich kosztów, w porównaniu z tzw. źródłami konwencjonalnymi, z dwóch głównych powodów: ekologicznych (wszędzie tam, gdzie ekologia ma większe znaczenie niż ekonomia), oraz praktycznych (promieniowanie słoneczne jest praktycznie wszędzie dostępne).
