The term "photodissociation" may also refer to nuclear photodissociation.Photodissociation (or photolysis) is a chemical reaction in which a chemical compound is broken down by photons. Photodissociation is not limited to visible light, but to have enough energy to break up a molecule; the photon is likely to be an electromagnetic wave with the energy of visible light or higher, such as ultraviolet light, x-rays and gamma rays. The direct process is defined as the interaction of one or more photons interacting with one target molecule.

On appelle photolyse toute réaction chimique dans laquelle un composé chimique est décomposé par la lumière. Le processus direct est défini comme l'interaction d'un photon inter-réagissant avec une molécule cible.

Unter einer Photolyse bzw. Fotolyse versteht man ganz allgemein die Spaltung eines Moleküls ausgelöst durch die Bestrahlung mit Licht. Dabei wird durch die Stärke der zu lösenden chemischen Bindung bestimmt, welche Wellenlänge das eingestrahlte Licht maximal haben darf, um genug Energie aufbringen zu können, diese Bindung zu spalten. Für elektromagnetische Wellen gilt: Je niedriger die Wellenlänge ist, um so höher ist die Energie, die pro Photon/Energiequant übertragen werden kann.

Il processo diretto è definito come l'interazione di un fotone con una molecola.
