Phosphorus

Phosphorus, (, meaning "light", and phoros meaning "bearer"), is the chemical element that has the symbol P and atomic number 15. A multivalent nonmetal of the nitrogen group, phosphorus is commonly found in inorganic phosphate rocks.Due to its high reactivity, phosphorus is never found as a free element in nature. One form of phosphorus (white phosphorus) emits a faint glow upon exposure to oxygen (hence its Greek derivation and the Latin 'light-bearer', meaning the planet Venus as Hesperus or "Morning Star").Phosphorus is a component of DNA and RNA and an essential element for all living cells. The most important commercial use of phosphorus-based chemicals is the production of fertilisers.

Phosphoreszenz ist die durch die strahlende Desaktivierung hervorgerufene Eigenschaft eines Stoffes, nach einem Beleuchten mit (sichtbarem oder UV-) Licht im Dunkeln nachzuleuchten. Dieses Phänomen beobachteten Alchemisten schon im 17. Jahrhundert.

Fosfor (P, łac. phosphorus – "niosący światło") to pierwiastek chemiczny, niemetal. Po raz pierwszy wyodrębnił go Hennig Brand w 1669 r.Jedynym izotopem stabilnym fosforu jest 31P.Fosfor jest niezbędny do życia. Wchodzi w skład kwasów nukleinowych oraz wielu związków przekazujących energię na poziomie molekularnym, takich jak ATP. W organizmach zwierzęcych fosfor jest składnikiem kości i kwasów nukleinowych. Należy do grupy makroelementów. W wodzie i alkoholu jest on prawie nierozpuszczalny, nieco rozpuszcza się w eterze, łatwo – w trójchlorku fosforu, chlorku siarki i siarczku węgla. Z ostatniego z wymienionych rozpuszczalników fosfor wydziela się po odparowaniu w postaci kryształów układu regularnego o połysku diamentowym.

Il fosforo è l'elemento chimico avente numero atomico 15 e simbolo P. È un non-metallo del gruppo dell'azoto.Il fosforo non si trova in natura allo stato nativo ma, sottoforma di fosfato (sale dell'acido fosforico), è abbondante in alcune rocce e nelle cellule degli esseri viventi, del cui metabolismo è un componente essenziale. Il fosforo elementare è estremamente reattivo e, combinandosi con l'ossigeno emette una tenue luminescenza (da cui il suo nome, che in greco significa "portatore di luce"). Il principale uso industriale del fosforo è nella produzione di fertilizzanti. È impiegato anche nella produzione di esplosivi, fiammiferi, fuochi artificiali, pesticidi, dentifrici e detergenti.
