Phoenicia

Phoenicia (or Phenicia \\, from Biblical Phenice \\) was an ancient civilization centered in the north of ancient Canaan, with its heartland along the coast of modern day Lebanon and Syria. Phoenician civilization was an enterprising maritime trading culture that spread across the Mediterranean during the first millennium BC, between the period of 1200 BC to 900 BC. Though ancient boundaries of such city-centered cultures fluctuated, the city of Tyre seems to have been the southernmost. Sarepta (modern day Sarafand) between Sidon and Tyre, is the most thoroughly excavated city of the Phoenician homeland. The Phoenicians often traded by means of a galley, a man-powered sailing vessel. They were the first civilization to create the bireme. There is still debate on the subject of whether the Canaanites and Phoenicians were different peoples or not .

Die Phönizier waren ein semitisches Volk der Antike und lebten hauptsächlich im Bereich des jetzigen Libanons und Syriens an der Mittelmeerküste in voneinander unabhängigen Stadtstaaten. Die wichtigsten waren Akko, Arwad, Arados, Byblos, Berytos, Sidon und Tyros, wobei Tyros zwischen 1000 v. Chr. bis ca. 774 v. Chr. die führende Macht war.

Fenicja (łac. Phoenicia terra lub Phoenice, z gr. Phoinike; fenickie Bani Kan'an "dzieci Kanaanu") – starożytna kraina na wschodnim wybrzeżu Morza Śródziemnego, która obejmowała tereny dzisiejszego Libanu, zachodniej Syrii i północnego Izraela.Południowa część Fenicji kończyła się górami Karmel i oddzielała Galileę w Palestynie od morza. Na północy Fenicja dochodziła w pewnych okresach aż do miasta Gabala (dzisiejsze Dżebele). Kraj ten ciągnął się więc z północy na południe na długości 200-320 km przy szerokości 10-50 km. Powierzchnia Fenicji była górzysta. Zalesione w starożytności góry Libanu piętrzą się wzdłuż całego kraju, tu i ówdzie przecięte żyznymi dolinami. Niekiedy góry zbliżają się tak do morza, że z trudem można przeprowadzić przez nie drogę. Wszystkie więc większe osiedla (Tyr, Sydon, Arwad i inne) znajdowały się nad morzem, kraj zaś położony dalej od morza był mało zaludniony. Dlatego też Fenicja prawdopodobnie nie miała nigdy wielu mieszkańców.
