Phocus
In
Greek mythology, two different people bore the name Phocus.A Phocus, son of
Aeacus and
Psamathe. He was a strong athlete and this ability arose the jealousy of his half-brothers,
Peleus and
Telamon. Phocus was killed by one his half-brothers, and his body was hidden in the woods. The tradition varies at this point: 1. Telamon threw a quoit at his head. 2. Telamon killed him with a spear while hunting. 3. Peleus killed him to please his mother,
Endeis. Other sources say that (whichever brother was responsible) it was an accident. He had one son:
Panopeus.A son of
Poseidon, this Phocus founded the city of
Phocis, which was named after him. He was a successful fisherman who earned the jealousy of his fellows. They conspired to drown him, but when they pushed him into the sea, far out from shore, his father Poseidon transformed him into a seal.

Oudgrieks: / Phokos) is een personage uit de
Griekse mythologie. Hij was een zoon van
Aeacus, koning van
Aegina, en van de
Nereïde Psamathe.Phocus was de lievelingszoon van Aeacus, en met name zijn fysieke overmacht tijdens sportwedstrijden was een grote bron van ergernis voor zijn halfbroers
Telamon en
Peleus, de zonen die Aeacus bij Endeïs had verwekt. Zij vreesden dan ook dat hun vader uitgerekend Phocus tot erfgenaam van zijn koninkrijk zou aanstellen, en, aangemoedigd door hun moeder, smeedden zij een plan om hun lastige concurrent uit de weg te ruimen. Ze daagden hem uit tot een vijfkamp, waarbij zij zogenaamd per ongeluk een stenen
discus naar zijn hoofd slingerden. De jongen overleefde de aanslag niet, en zijn broers verborgen het lijk in een bosje, waar het niettemin door Aeacus werd gevonden.
