In the compositional technique phasing, the same part (a repetitive phrase) is played on two musical instruments, in steady but not identical tempo. Thus, the two instruments gradually shift out of unison, creating first a slight echo as one instrument plays a little behind the other, then a doubling with each note heard twice, then a complex ringing effect, and eventually coming back through doubling and echo into unison. Phasing is the rhythmic equivalent of cycling through the phase of two waveforms as in phasing. Note that the tempi of the two instruments are almost identical, so that both parts are perceived as being in the same tempo: the changes only separate the parts gradually. In some cases, especially live performance where gradual separation is extremely difficult, phasing is accomplished by periodically inserting an extra note into the phrase of one of the two players playing the same repeated phrase, thus shifting the phase by a single beat at a time, rather than gradually.

In der Minimal Music bezeichnet Phasing eine Kompositionstechnik, bei der zwei Instrumente dieselbe, oft repetitive Stimme ausführen, wobei eines in stetigem Tempo spielt, während sich das andere in zunehmendem zeitlichem Abstand vor das erste bewegt. Die beiden Stimmen geraten so zunächst "aus der Phase" und allmählich wieder "in Phase" (Phasenverschiebung). Beide Stimmen werden als im selben Tempo gespielt empfunden; es ergeben sich lediglich klanglich und rhythmisch veränderliche Höreindrücke.

La technique du phasing (en français phasage) a été popularisée par le compositeur Steve Reich. Le principe du phasing est de faire jouer une phrase musicale par deux instruments, dans un tempo régulier mais non identique. Ainsi, les notes jouées par les deux instruments se décalent graduellement, quittant ainsi l'unisson. Le premier effet entendu est d'abord un léger écho lorsqu'un des instruments joue immédiatement après l'autre. Puis les sons se dédoublent nettement, chaque note étant entendue deux fois, produisant alors un effet complexe. Par la suite, on retrouve l'effet d'écho et enfin le retour à l'unisson. Notez que les tempos des deux instruments sont presque identiques, de sorte que les deux motifs soient perçus comme étant dans le même tempo : les motifs se décalent graduellement.
