Phase change

In thermodynamics, phase transition or phase change is the transformation of a thermodynamic system from one phase to another. The distinguishing characteristic of a phase transition is an abrupt change in one or more physical properties, in particular the heat capacity, with a small change in a thermodynamic variable such as the temperature. In the English vernacular, the term is most commonly used to describe transitions between solid, liquid and gaseous states of matter, in rare cases including plasma.

A change in the way atoms, molecules or particles aggregate in a substance. The different aggregations are known as phases; gas, liquid, solid. For instance, when water exists as a vapour in clouds, changes in temperature and pressure can cause it to change its phase. The result is that the water molecules aggregate into a liquid and the water falls as rain. A further cooling can produce solid ice.

A change in the state of a sample of matter; for example, solid to liquid or liquid to gas. Phase changes are considered physical rather than chemical changes.
