Doctor Philosophiae, equivalente del Doctorado de investigación en Iberoamérica.El PhD es el doctorado de investigación más común en los Estados Unidos y en el Reino Unido. Sin embargo hay otros tipos de doctorado que son también denotados como acrónimos: Ed.D. (Doctor of Education), D.A. (Doctor of Arts), DBA (Doctor of Business Administration), D.M.A. (Doctor of Musical Arts), Th.D. (Doctor of Theology), etc. La escritura con punto (Ph.D.) es del inglés norteamericano, mientras la forma sin punto (PhD) es del inglés Británico.
