Phèdre
Phèdre is a dramatic tragedy written in 1677 by Jean Racine. With Phèdre, Racine again chose a subject from Greek mythology, already treated by Greek and Roman tragic poets, notably by Euripides in Hippolytus and Seneca in Phaedra. As a result of an intrigue by the Duchess of Bouillon and other friends of the aging Corneille, the play was not a success at its premiére. As a result, Racine did not write another play until he received a commission to write Esther in 1689 from Madame de Maintenon, the mistress of Louis XIV.
