Airedale Terrier (More...)
Appearance
The Airedale's outercoat is wiry and its undercoat is soft. The color can be tan and black or tan and dark gray. The head, ears, and beard are always tan.
Grooming & Exercise Needs
Grooming requirements are minimal. Show dogs need stripping (removing old hair by hand) and pets require occasional clipping. Daily vigorous exercise, such as a few long, brisk walks and a couple of aerobic play sessions, will help keep the Airedale happy.
Origins
The Airedale terrier originated in the 19th century in Yorkshire, England, along the Aire River, when a black-and-tan terrier (now extinct) was crossed with an otter hound. The result was a fearless, tenacious dog (terrier) that loved cold water (otter hound).
Special Alerts
Breed-related health concerns: malignant tumors, such as lymphoma, hypothyroidism.
