Petrus Plancius

Petrus Plancius (1552–May 15 1622), was a Dutch astronomer,  cartographer  and clergyman. He was born as Pieter Platevoet in Dranoutre, Flanders. He studied theology in Germany and England. At the age of 24 he became a minister in the Dutch Reformed Church. Because of fear for religious prosecution by the Inquisition he fled from Brussels to Amsterdam after the city fell in Spanish hands in 1585. There he became interested in navigation  and cartography and, being fortunate enough to have access to nautical charts recently brought from Portugal, he was soon recognized as an expert on the shipping routes to India. He strongly believed in the idea of a North East passage until the failure of Willem Barentsz's third voyage in 1597 seemed to preclude the possibility of such a route.

Petrus Plancius (1552-1622), était un commerçant néerlandais d'Amsterdam, qui s'exerça avec bonheur dans plusieurs disciplines : -Théologie protestante : il est resté célèbre pour sa querelle avec Jacobus Arminius (1560 - 1609), fondateur de l'arminianisme et de la Fraternité remonstrante. A partir de 1591, Plancius, attaqua son collègue en Théologie protestante Jacobus Arminius, auquel il reprochait son interprétation trop libre de la prédestination. Cependant, en 1593, leur querelle finit par s'apaiser.

Petrus Plancius, holländisch Pieter Platevoet („Peter Plattfuß“, auch Platevoete, Plantius, Plat(t)) (* 1552 in Dranouter, Flandern † 1622) war ein niederländischer Theologe, Astronom und Kartograf. Er fertigte zahlreiche Landkarten sowie Sternkarten und Himmelsgloben an und führte neue Sternbilder ein.
