One of the finest exponents of the right wing-back role, Petrescu has great experience of major finals. He played nine matches and scored one goal in the 1994 and 1998 World Cups, and was one of Romania’s best players at Euro 96. His solitary FIFA World Cup goal came against England in the 1998 finals, a dramatic late winner after a typical surge into the opposition penalty area. Now he is a very experienced player who has played in two of Europe’s strongest leagues, Italy’s Serie A and England’s Premier League. He has enjoyed plenty of success in a highly successful club career, winning three league titles and one cup with Steaua Bucuresti, and the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, the FA Cup and League Cup with Chelsea FC. Adept in defence, magnificent raiding forward, Petrescu is a tremendously versatile player who can play in defence and midfield - hence his excellence as a wing-back. He was named Romanian Player of 1999, and was also deservedly selected for Romania’s ‘Team of the Millennium’.
