A petition is a request to an authority, most commonly a government official or public entity. Petitions to a
deity are a form of
prayer.In the colloquial sense, a petition is a document addressed to some official & signed by numerous individuals. A petition may be oral rather than written, and in this era may be transmitted via the Internet. The term also has a specific meaning in the legal profession as a request, directed to a
court or administrative tribunal, seeking some sort of relief such as a
court order.

souverain, ou au représentant de l'exécutif. Par extension, il est possible de faire une pétition envers toute personne morale disposant d'un pouvoir.

Behörde oder an eine
Volksvertretung. Es handelt sich meist um Bitten von Bürgern an Parlamente, Gesetze zu ändern bzw. zu beschließen. Petent wird derjenige genannt, der solch eine Petition einbringt. Die Zulässigkeit von Petitionen ist ein allgemein anerkannter Bestandteil
demokratischer Grundrechte. Petitionen an Parlamente werden an den jeweiligen
Petitionsausschuss weitergeleitet, der sie prüft und beantwortet.
