Height: 12.5-15.5 inches.
Weight: 30-42 lbs.
Life Span: 11-13 yrs.
Breed Group: Scent Hounds
Overview
The happy, extroverted petit basset griffon Vendeen makes a loyal, affectionate companion. It does well in obedience classes, which should be started early. PBGVs get along very well with children if treated gently and introduced to them at an early age. They also enjoy the company of other animals, although they can be possessive of toys and food bowls and have a tendency to bark excessively if not corrected early. Well suited for country life, they can also live in the city or suburbs as long as they get enough exercise, playtime, and social interaction.
Appearance
With its long eyebrows, beard, mustache, and rough coat, the PBGV has an unkempt appearance. The outercoat is long and harsh to the touch; the undercoat is thicker and shorter. Coat color is white with any combination of lemon, orange, black, tricolor, or grizzle markings. The PBGV carries its strong, tapered tail like a saber.
Grooming & Exercise Needs
PBGVs need to be brushed and combed once a week. They require a lot of play and brisk daily walks.
Origins
PBGVs originated about 400 years ago in the Vendée region of western France, where they ran in packs to hunt hare. Its stamina and drive made it well suited for this rugged coastal area.
