In the mythology of the Cook Islands, Pere is the daughter of Ma'uike, from whom Maui obtained fire and placed it into trees. Pere has some features in common with the Hawaiian volcano goddess Pele. 3. Père is dervied from the Old French word padre (father). It is used as a surname that distinquishes a father from a son, i.e., Alexander Dumas, père.
