Pennant
Pennant may refer to:A usually narrow, tapering flag most commonly flown by ships at sea and sometimes called "pennence". Navies use a variety of pennants:Pennant (commissioning), the traditional sign of a warship, flown from its masthead while the ship is in commissionBroad pennant, flown from the masthead of a Royal Navy ship to indicate the presence of a commodore on boardPennant (church), flown by navies during services on board ships. In the United States Navy it is flown above a flag of national colorspennant number, a number used to identify ships by the modern Royal Navy and other navies of Europe and the CommonwealthIn team sports, a commemorative flag displayed or flown by a league-winning team. The last few weeks of the regular American professional baseball season, for instance, are known as the "pennant race". This is probably a holdover from the time (pre-1969) when the league championships were determined by the team with the best record at the end of the season, and to a lesser extent when there were division races but no wild cards (1969–93).A reference to the pennant-shaped "No Passing Zone" traffic sign found in the United States, used to indicate the start of a two-lane highway where vehicles traveling in the same direction are not permitted to pass each other. A small flag; a pennon. The narrow, / long, pennant (called also whip or coach whip) is a long, narrow piece of bunting, carried at the masthead of a government vessel in commission. The board pennant is an oblong, nearly square flag, carried at the masthead of a commodore's vessel.
