The name Pelasgians (
Ancient Greek: Πελασγοί - Pelasgoí, s. Pelasgós) was used by some
ancient Greek writers to refer to groups of people who preceded the
Hellenes. Some of these people still dwelt in several locations in mainland
Greece,
Crete, and other regions of the
Aegean, as neighbors of the Hellenes, into the 5th century BC. However, other ancient Greek and Roman writers describe them as
Greeks. Even though ancient Greek references to the Pelasgians are confusing, many Greek writers agreed that Pelasgians had spoken a "barbaric" or "unsophisticated Greek" language. No secure archaeological connection of Pelasgians with a
Late Neolithic site has been made.
