Pecos River

The Pecos River or Rio Pecos, as it is known in New Mexico, rises near Santa Fe, New Mexico, United States, and flows for through the eastern portion of that state and neighboring Texas before it empties into the Rio Grande near Del Rio. The river drains approximately of land.The river is dammed at Avalon and McMillan to help irrigate about as part of the Carlsbad reclamation project (established in 1906). Texas has also dammed the river at the Red Bluff Dam in the western part of that state to form the Red Bluff Reservoir. The portion of the reservoir that extends into New Mexico forms the lowest point in that state. New Mexico and Texas disputed water rights to the river until the federal government settled the dispute in 1949.

Le Pecos (Pecos River ou encore Rio Pecos) est un affluent du Rio Grande qui prend sa source dans l'État américain du Nouveau-Mexique et qui traverse l'Ouest du Texas. Deux barrages sont installés sur le cours d'eau à Avalon et McMillan pour les besoins de l'irrigation. Au Texas, le barrage de Red Bluff a entraîné la formation du Red Bluff Reservoir. Der Pecos entspringt nahe Santa Fe, im Bundesstaat New Mexico der USA, und fließt über 1.490 km durch den Ostteil dieses Bundesstaates und das benachbarte Texas, ehe er in der Nähe von Del Rio in den Rio Grande mündet. Der Fluss entwässert 114.700 km² des Gebiets. In Avalon und McMillan wird der Fluss aufgestaut, um im Rahmen des 1906 gegründeten Carlsbad reclamation project bei der Bewässerung von etwa 101 km² Land zu helfen. Im westlichen Teil von Texas wird der Fluss ebenfalls durch den Red Bluff Dam zum Red Bluff Stausee aufgestaut. Der Teil des Stausees, der nach New Mexico heineinreicht, bildet den tiefsten Punkt dieses Bundesstaats. New Mexico und Texas stritten über die Wasserrechte am Fluss, bis die Regierung der Vereinigten Staaten in Washington den Streit im Jahre 1949 entschied.
