Pearl River Delta

The Pearl River Delta Region (PRD) in China occupies the low-lying areas alongside the Pearl River estuary where the Pearl river flows into the South China Sea. Since the "Open Door Policy" was adopted by the Communist Party of China in the late 1970s, the portion of the delta in Guangdong Province has become one of the leading economic regions and a major manufacturing center of mainland China. The PRC government hopes that the manufacturing in Guangdong, combined with the financial and service economy and traditional western influence in Hong Kong will create an economic gateway attracting foreign capital throughout mainland China.

De Pearl River Delta is een van de grotere 'megalopolissen' in de wereld, liggend in het zuiden van China, in de provincie Kanton.Officiële cijfers stellen dat het gebied circa 35 miljoen inwoners had in 2001, huidige schattingen variëren van 40 tot 60 miljoen mensen, waarvan een groot deel bestaat uit ongeregistreerde Chinezen. Het gebied omvat onder meer Hongkong, Macao, Kanton, Zhuhai en Shenzhen. Ook vindt men er een van de grootste havens ter wereld, Hongkong. Het gebied is het snelst groeiende gebied qua inwonertal en BNP.
