Patriotism

Patriotism denotes positive and supportive attitudes to a 'fatherland' (Latin patria < Greek patris, πατρίς), by individuals and groups. The 'fatherland' (or 'motherland') can be a region or a city, but patriotism usually applies to a nation and/or a nation-state. Patriotism covers such attitudes as: pride in its achievements and culture, the desire to preserve its character and the basis of the culture, and identification with other members of the nation. Patriotism is closely associated with nationalism, and is often used as a synonym for it. Strictly speaking, nationalism is an ideology - but it often promotes patriotic attitudes as desirable and appropriate. (Both nationalist political movements, and patriotic expression, may, yet need not, be negative towards other people's 'fatherland').

Als Patriotismus (von lat. patria, Heimat, Vaterland) wird eine emotionale Verbundenheit mit der eigenen Nation bezeichnet. Im Deutschen wird anstelle des Lehnwortes auch der Begriff „Vaterlandsliebe“ synonym verwendet.Diese Bindung wird auch als Nationalgefühl oder Nationalstolz benannt und kann sich auf ganz verschiedene als Merkmale der eigenen Nation angesehene Aspekte beziehen, etwa ethnische, kulturelle,  politische oder historische. Im Unterschied zu einer historisch-kulturellen Bindung steht der Verfassungspatriotismus für das positive Bekenntnis zu den in einer staatlichen Verfassung verankerten übernationalen ethischen und politischen Grundwerten. Diese beziehen sich in der Tradition westlicher Rechtsstaaten auf die unveräußerliche Menschenwürde und davon abgeleitete Menschenrechte, für die universale Geltung beansprucht wird. Patriotismus wird heute allgemein von Nationalismus und Chauvinismus unterschieden, insofern Patrioten sich mit dem eigenen Land und Volk identifizieren, ohne ihre Nation über andere zu stellen und andere Völker implizit abzuwerten. Ob und wieweit dieser Unterschied tatsächlich besteht und historisch wirksam wurde, ist in vielen Ländern umstritten.

Patriotyzm (łac. patria = ojczyzna, gr. patris) – postawa szacunku, umiłowania i oddania własnej ojczyźnie oraz chęć ponoszenia dla niej ofiar. To stawianie dobra ojczyzny ponad własne. Charakteryzuje się też przedkładaniem celów ważnych dla ojczyzny nad osobiste, a często także gotowością do poświęcenia własnego zdrowia lub życia. Patriotyzm to również umiłowanie i pielęgnowanie narodowej tradycji, kultury czy języka.

Vaderlandsliefde (ook wel patriottisme) een gevoel van trots voor (bepaalde aspecten van) het land van herkomst of (mocht er emigratie plaatsvinden) land waarin een persoon woonachtig is. Vaderlandsliefde wordt in de regel niet als negatief ervaren, echter verwante begrippen als 'nationalisme' en 'chauvinisme' (een blinde ingenomenheid met alles van en in het eigen land) wel, al zal een chauvinist of nationalist zich zelden anders dan een patriot voorstellen.
