Partition Coefficient

In the fields of organic and medicinal chemistry, a partition or distribution coefficient (KD) is the ratio of concentrations of a compound in the two phases of a mixture of two immiscible solvents at equilibrium. Hence these coefficients are a measure of differential solubility of the compound between these two solvents.

Der n-Oktanol-Wasser-Verteilungskoeffizient Kow (auch Schreibweisen wie Octanol/Wasser-Verteilungskoeffizient gebräuchlich und korrekt) ist ein dimensionsloser Verteilungskoeffizient, der das Verhältnis der Konzentrationen einer Chemikalie in einem Zweiphasensystem aus n-Oktanol und Wasser angibt. Vor allem in der englischen Literatur wird der dekadische Logarithmus des Verteilungskoeffizient oft auch als log P bezeichnet. In Sicherheitsdatenblättern findet sich häufig die Schreibweise log Pow bzw. seltener log pOW.
