Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro

The Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (Portuguese: Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro, PMDB) is the successor of the Brazilian Democratic Movement. It is largely a centrist party with no fixed ideology, including a range of liberals as well as the former guerilla movement MR-8.Under military rule from 1965 to 1979, Brazil had a legally enforced two party system, with supporters of the regime gathered under the National Renewal Alliance Party (ARENA) umbrella, and the official opposition making up the MDB. From 1979 onwards, a restricted number of parties were allowed, and the PMDB emerged. In 1985, party leader Tancredo Neves won the presidential election. He died at the beginning of his term, but his running mate Jose Sarney, also a member of the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party, became president, serving until 1990. He was the only president of Brazil to come from the party, and in recent presidential elections the party has not run presidential candidates, preferring to focus on congressional and gubernatorial elections.

Der Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro, PMDB (deutsch Partei der Brasilianischen Demokratischen Bewegung) ist eine zentristische und populistische Partei in Brasilien.Die Partei wurde 1965 unter dem Namen Movimento Democrático Brasileiro gegründet. In der Zeit der Militärdiktatur, die bis 1979 währte, war der MDB die einzige zugelassene Opposition zur Regierungspartei Aliança Renovadora Nacional (ARENA). 1979 wurden dann auch andere Parteien zugelassen, und der MDB wandelte sich in den PMDB um. 1985 wurde Tancredo Neves vom PMDB durch das Wahlkollegium zum Präsidenten gewählt. Er konnte das Amt aufgrund einer tödlich verlaufenden Krankheit nicht ausüben und sein Parteifreund José Sarney übernahm die Amtsgeschäfte. Sarney führte das Land bis 1990. Seitdem ist der PMDB in der Opposition.
