Paris-Brest-Paris

Paris-Brest-Paris (PBP) was originally a 1200km long bicycle race from Paris to Brest and back to Paris. It is the oldest bicycling event that is still regularly run.Since 1931 it has become two independent long distance bicycle tours. One is randonnée (also called Brevet), where cyclists ride individually. This is held every four years. The other is an audax where cyclist ride in a group, held every five years.The audax is organised by the Union des Audax françaises, while the Brevet is organised by the Audax Club Parisien. This confuses people sometimes.

La Parigi-Brest-Parigi (spesso abbreviata in PBP) è una gara amatoriale di ciclismo che si tiene ogni quattro anni in Francia fra Parigi e Brest (e ritorno), per una distanza totale di 1200km. Viene considerata come la più prestigiosa fra le manifestazioni sulla lunga distanza.Nacque come gara per professionisti nel 1891, anche se nel corso degli anni vi parteciparono parecchi amatori. L'ultima edizione aperta ai professionisti fu quella del 1951.Attualmente per parteciparvi è necessario aver completato, nell'arco di un anno, quattro brevetti sulle distanze dei 200, 300, 400 e 600 chilometri. Il tempo massimo per coprire i 1200km è di 90 ore.

Parijs-Brest-Parijs was een buitengewoon lange wielerwedstrijd (bijna 1200 km) die sinds 1891 elke tien jaar werd gehouden. Tot 1951 werd de wedstrijd door professionals bestreden, hierna werd het een vijfjaarlijkse en vanaf 1971 vierjaarlijkse tocht voor liefhebbers van het langeafstandsfietsen. In 1956 en 1961 stond de proftocht wel op het programma, maar werd wegens te weinig belangstelling afgelast.
