This length increases to 3,998 km (2,484 miles) if the distance is counted from the headwaters of the Paranaiba River in Brazil. It is considered second in size only to the Amazon River among South American rivers. The name Paraná comes from the Tupi language and means "like the sea" (that is, "as big as the sea").

This article refers to the river in Goiás, central Brazil: for the longer river of southern Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay, see Paraná River. The difference between the two is in the accent on the final syllable. The Paranã River is located in Goiás state, Brazil. It divides two regions - the Northeast and north-central Goiás. It is formed by tributaries that descend the Serra Geral, the mountains that divide eastern Goiás and Bahia. One of the most important tributaries is the Crixás, which has its source near Formosa. Farther to the north the Paranã becomes the main tributary of the Tocantins River on the right bank. Today it is crossed by a long concrete bridge between the municipalities of Iaciara and Nova Roma. It forms the valley which makes up a vast region called the Vão do Paranã Microregion

Jej długość wynosi 4380 km, a powierzchnia jej dorzecza - 3,1 mln km².To druga po  Amazonce pod względem długości i powierzchni dorzecza rzeka w Ameryce Płd. Powstaje z połączenia rzek Rio Grande i Paranaiba, które zbierają wody z południowo-wschodniej części Wyżyny Brazylijskiej. Płynie w kierunku południowym i uchodzi do Oceanu Atlantyckiego w postaci estuarium La Plata. Il Paraná (Río Paraná in spagnolo, Rio Paraná in portoghese) è un fiume del Sud America che attraversa il Brasile, il Paraguay e l'Argentina; è il fiume che bagna Buenos Aires. È lungo 2.570 chilometri ed è considerato il secondo fiume più lungo del Sud America dopo il Rio delle Amazzoni.
