a stimulating conversation that generates ideas without necessarily resulting in consensus.  These new ideas emerge, in large part, because paralogy allows us to define the rules of language terms locally and provisionally.  That is, in a local conversation we might say, "I am using the word in this sense."   (Of course, there are many terms that will not be defined locally even in a paralogical conversation.)  This is
Lyotard 's term; however, Lyotard conceived of paralogy involving
agonistics, and after much conversation on this topic in PMTH, most feel that it can and does take place without agonistics, or at least without aggressive agonistics.  Most people on PMTH look for a different metaphor or
social poetics to describe the way in which one comment links to another in paralogy.
Being homologous due to a recent or past duplication in the same species. An example is the chromosomal regions 1q22-q23;6p21.31; and 9q33-q34 in humans. These regions contain very similar genes including some of the MHC class III genes.
