Paper Birch
Paper Birch (Betula papyrifera), also known as American White Birch, Canoe Birch, is a species of
birch native to northern
North America, from
Newfoundland west to
Alaska, south to
Pennsylvania and
Washington, with small isolated populations further south in
mountains to
North Carolina and
Colorado.It is a medium-sized
deciduous tree reaching 20 m tall (exceptionally to 35 m) with a trunk up to 80 cm diameter. The
bark is white, commonly brightly so, flaking in fine horizontal strips, and often with small black marks and scars. In individuals younger than five years the bark appears brown with white lenticels, making the tree much harder to distinguish from other trees. The
leaves are alternate, ovate, 5-12 cm long and 4-9 cm broad, with a doubly serrate margin. The leaf buds are conical and small, they are green colored with brown edges. The
flowers are wind-pollinated
catkins 3-8 cm long growing from the tips of twigs, the
fruit matures in the fall. The mature fruit is composed of numerous tiny winged
seeds packed between the catkin bracts. They drop between September and spring.

Bouleau à papier
Le bouleau à papier (Betula papyrifera), communément appelé bouleau blanc ou bouleau à canot au
Québec, est une
espèce de
bouleau dont l'
écorce se détache facilement en bandes. Il pousse en
Amérique du Nord. C'est un des composants majeurs de la
forêt mixte du nord des
États-Unis (centre et est) ainsi que du
Canada (centre et est). C'est une espèce de transition lors de la régénération des forêts, car il a besoin de beaucoup de lumière pour prospérer. Il atteint rarement une centaine d'années, s'affaiblissant et souffrant rapidement de maladies ou de pourriture dès que le couvert forestier se referme autour de lui.

De papierberk (Betula papyrifera) is afkomstig uit het noorden van de
Verenigde Staten.Het is een meerstammige
boom die 15 tot 20 m hoog wordt, met een roomwitte schors die in vele dunne witte stroken afschilfert. De twijgen zijn roodbruin. De bladeren zijn eirond tot hartvormig, 5 tot 10 cm lang en toegespitst. De mannelijke
katjes staan steeds per 3, de vrouwelijke hangen meestal. De vruchtschubben zijn behaard.
