Palm mute

The palm mute, also known as palm muting or chop, is a playing technique for the guitar or bass guitar. This technique is known as pizzicato by classical guitar players (see classical guitar techniques for details).Palm mutes are executed by placing the side of the picking hand below the little finger across all of the strings very close to the bridge and then plucking the strings with the fingers while the damping is in effect. This produces a muted sound. The name is a slight misnomer, as the muting is usually performed by the side or heel of the hand.

Le palm mute, appelé aussi parfois chop, est une technique de jeu pour la guitare et la basse; elle est connue sous le nom de pizzicato par les joueurs de guitare classique. Elle consiste à poser la main droite sur les cordes juste au dessus du chevalet, de façon à étouffer plus ou moins légèrement les notes; elle est généralement employée par le musicien pendant qu'il joue à l'aide d'un médiator.

Palm Muting (oder auch Palm Mute) bezeichnet eine Spieltechnik der Anschlagshand beim Gitarrenspiel. Es stellt eine Unterform des Dämpfens (engl. muting) dar. Hierbei werden die Saiten des Instruments mit dem Handballen der rechten Hand (bei Rechtshändern) abgedämpft. Dazu wird dieser nahe am Steg über die gewünschten Saiten gelegt. Die bespielten Saiten werden so am freien Schwingen gehindert, wodurch ein kürzerer, perkussiver Klang erzeugt wird.

Il palm mute è una tecnica tipica degli strumenti a corda che consiste nello smorzare il suono della corda con il palmo della mano destra (la stessa che le pizzica) mentre viene fatta suonare. Questa tecnica può avere la semplice funzione di interrompere un suono, "suonare una pausa": nel caso specifico della chitarra e del basso elettrico, il palm mute viene spesso adoperato in sostituzione delle pause che risulterebbero altrimenti troppo vuote rispetto ad una linea ritmica continua. Il palm mute può anche essere usata per abbellire un pattern o per lasciare spazio ad altri strumenti. Nel caso ad esempio di Around The World dei Red Hot Chili Peppers, Flea (il bassista) ha un ruolo di primo piano durante gran parte del brano, ma esegue interi riff con la tecnica del palm mute quando vuole lasciare spazio alla chitarra ed alla voce.
