Palatal consonant
Palatal consonants are consonants articulated with the body of the tongue raised against the hard palate (the middle part of the roof of the mouth). Consonants with the tip of the tongue curled back against the palate are called retroflex.

Palatal
In der Phonetik beschreibt palatal den Artikulationsort eines Lautes am Gaumen. Ein Palatal wird durch direkten Kontakt der Zunge mit dem vorderen (harten) Gaumen (lat. palatum durum) oder durch Annäherung der Zunge an diesen gebildet (vergleiche: Velar).

Consonne palatale
Une consonne palatale ou, plus brièvement un palatale, désigne, en phonétique articulatoire, une consonne dorsale dont le lieu d'articulation est situé sur la partie supérieure du palais dite « palais dur » (par opposition au palais mou ou velum) ; l'organe articulateur est le dos de la langue.

Spółgłoska podniebienna lub inaczej palatalna to spółgłoska średniojęzykowa wymawiana, gdy środkowa część języka dotyka podniebienia twardego.

W międzynarodowym systemie zapisu fonetycznego IPA występują symbole dla następujących spółgłosek podniebiennych:

  • [c] - np. w węgierskim kutya "pies"
  • ] - np. w węgierskim wyrazie egy "jeden"
  • ] - w języku niemieckim w zaimku pierwszej osoby liczby pojedynczej ich
  • ] - w języku hiszpańskim alofon fonemu [j] np. w wyrazie yema - żółtko
  • ] - polskie ń w wyrazie koń, hiszpańskie ñ w niño, francuskie gn w agneau
  • [j] - polskie j w wyrazie jabłko
  • ] - włoskie gl w wyrazie figlio
