Pacific Ocean

The Pacific Ocean (from the Latin name Mare Pacificum, "peaceful sea", bestowed upon it by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan) is the largest of the Earth's oceanic divisions. It extends from the Arctic in the north to the Antarctic in the south, bounded by Asia and Australia on the west and the Americas on the east. At 169.2 million square kilometres (65.3 million square miles) in area, this largest division of the World Ocean – and, in turn, the hydrosphere – covers about 46% of the Earth's water surface and about 32% of its total surface area, making it larger than all of the Earth's land area combined. The equator subdivides it into the North Pacific Ocean and South Pacific Ocean. The Mariana Trench in the western North Pacific is the deepest point in the Pacific and the world, reaching a depth of 10,911 metres (35,798 feet).

L'océan Pacifique, qui s'étend sur une surface de 166 241 700 km², est l'océan le plus vaste du globe terrestre. Il comprend entièrement l'Océanie et quelques autres îles et archipels qui traditionnellement font partie de l'Asie (Japon, Philippines, Insulinde). Il est entouré par l'Asie, l'Australie et l'Amérique, alors que sa limite avec l'océan austral au sud est officiellement marquée au 60 degré de latitude sud. La ligne de changement de date le traverse aux alentours du méridien 180°.

Ocean Spokojny, Pacyfik, Ocean Wielki to ocean znajdujący się pomiędzy Azją, Ameryką Północną i Ameryką Południową, Antarktydą i Australią. Ocean ten jest największym, najgłębszym i najstarszym na świecie zbiornikiem wodnym. Z powierzchnią równą 179,7 mln km² zajmuje jedną trzecią całej Ziemi. Południkowo rozciąga się pomiędzy Morzem Beringa, a Antarktycznym Morzem Rossa na około 15,500 km. Największą rozpiętość równoleżnikową Pacyfik osiąga między Indonezją, a wybrzeżem Kolumbii i jest to 19,800 km.

L'oceano Pacifico, il più grande oceano del mondo, occupa circa un terzo della superficie terrestre, con un'area di 179 milioni di chilometri quadrati. Si estende da nord a sud per circa 15.500 chilometri, dal mar di Bering nell'Artico fino ai margini ghiacciati del mare di Ross nell'Antartide. La maggior larghezza in senso est-ovest viene raggiunta a circa 5 gradi di latitudine nord, con una distanza di 19.800 chilometri dall'Indonesia alle coste della Colombia. Il limite occidentale dell'oceano è in genere posto presso lo Stretto di Malacca. Il luogo più basso della superficie terrestre si trova nel Pacifico, presso la fossa delle Marianne.
