Portable Network Graphics (PNG) is a bitmapped image format that employs lossless data compression. PNG was created to improve upon and replace the GIF format, as an image-file format not requiring a patent license. PNG is pronounced "ping" ( in IPA).PNG supports palette-based (palettes of 24-bit RGB colors) or greyscale or RGB images. PNG was designed for transferring images on the Internet, not professional graphics, and so does not support other color spaces (such as CMYK).PNG files nearly always use file-extension "PNG" or "png" and are assigned MIME media type "image/png" (approved October 14 1996).

Portable Network Graphics (PNG [], engl. portable Netzwerkgrafiken) ist ein Grafikformat für Rastergrafiken. Es wurde als freier Ersatz für das ältere, bis zum Jahr 2004 mit Patentforderungen belastete Format GIF entworfen und ist weniger komplex als TIFF. Die Daten werden verlustfrei komprimiert abgespeichert (im Gegensatz zur verlustbehafteten JPEG-Kompression).

In informatica, il Portable Network Graphics (abbreviato PNG) è un formato di file per memorizzare immagini.Il PNG è stato creato nel 1995 da un gruppo di autori indipendenti, dopo che nel 1994 il popolarissimo formato GIF iniziò ad avere problemi di brevetti: i detentori del brevetto, dopo averlo ignorato per molti anni, decisero improvvisamente di chiedere un pagamento per ogni programma che lo utilizzasse. La reazione della comunità informatica fu prima di sorpresa, poi di sviluppo verso una direzione diversa. Il formato è stato approvato il 1 ottobre 1996 dal World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), terminando il suo iter nel gennaio 1997 come oggetto del Request for Comments (RFC) 2083.
