PI

Pi or π is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter in Euclidean geometry, approximately 3.14159. Pi is a mathematical constant and a transcendental (and therefore irrational) real number, with many uses in mathematics, physics, and engineering. It is also known as Archimedes' constant (not to be confused with an Archimedes number) and as Ludolph's number.

Die Kreiszahl p (pi) ist eine mathematische Konstante; ihr numerischer Wert beträgt Sie beschreibt in der Geometrie das Verhältnis des Umfangs eines Kreises zu seinem Durchmesser. Dieses Verhältnis ist unabhängig von der Größe des Kreises. Die Kreiszahl wird mit dem kleinen griechischen Buchstaben pi () bezeichnet, dem Anfangsbuchstaben des griechischen Wortes perifereia (Randbereich) bzw. perimeter (Umfang). Die Bezeichnung pi () erschien erstmals 1706 in dem Buch Synopsis palmariorum mathesos (zu Deutsch etwa: Eine neue Einführung in die Mathematik) des aus Wales stammenden Gelehrten William Jones (1675–1749). Die Kreiszahl p wird auch Archimedes-Konstante oder Ludolphsche Zahl (nach Ludolph van Ceulen) genannt.

La costante matematica p (si scrive "pi" dove le lettere greche non sono disponibili) è utilizzata moltissimo in matematica e fisica. Nella geometria piana, p viene definito come il  rapporto tra la circonferenza e il diametro di un cerchio, o anche come l'area di un cerchio di raggio 1. Molti libri moderni di analisi matematica definiscono p usando le  funzioni trigonometriche, per esempio come il più piccolo numero strettamente positivo per cui sen(x)=0 oppure il più piccolo numero che diviso per 2 annulla cos(x). Tutte le definizioni sono equivalenti.
