Portable Game Notation (PGN) ist ein Datenformat zur Speicherung von Schachpartien. Es wurde 1994 von Stephen J. Edwards entwickelt, um den Austausch von Schachdaten zwischen verschiedenen Schachprogrammen (zum Beispiel über das Internet) zu ermöglichen und zu vereinfachen.Das PGN-Format verwendet Zeichen aus dem ASCII-Zeichensatz und besteht aus zwei Teilen: Den Metadaten und den Zügen. Im ersten Teil, den Metadaten, werden Angaben wie Turnier, Ort, Datum, Runde, Spielernamen, Ergebnis und andere Informationen in normierten Feldern erfasst. Die Züge beruhen auf der allgemein üblichen algebraischen Notation. Kommentare werden in geschwungene Klammern {} eingeschlossen.

La notazione Portable Game (abbreviata PGN) è un formato usato in ambito digitale per registrare le partite di scacchi. La maggior parte dei programmi per giocare a scacchi tramite computer lo supportano (ad esempio Xboard).È stato progettato per essere facilmente leggibile dall'uomo e comodamente usato dai software per computer. Le mosse sono descritte in notazione algebrica e solitamente sono raccolte all'interno di file con estensione ".pgn" (da non confondere con i file ".png", che contengono immagini in formato Portable Network Graphics).

Portable Game Notation(PGN) is een vorm schaaknotatie waarbij de gegevens van schaakpartijen worden opgeslagen in ASCII-bestanden. Het is in de jaren tachtig bedacht door een groep Internetgebruikers die beoogden de uitwisselbaarheid van gegevens tussen schaaksoftware te vergroten. PGN heeft zich ontwikkeld tot een standaard. Praktische elk schaakprogramma en elke schaakdatabase kan PGN importeren of exporteren en vele websites stellen partijenverzamelingen in PGN beschikbaar.
