PCS
Abbreviation for Personal Communications Service. A
set of capabilities that allows some combination of
terminal mobility,
personal mobility, and service profile management. Note 1: The flexibility offered by PCS can supplement existing telecommunications services, such as cellular
radio, used for NS/EP missions. Note 2: PCS and UPT are sometimes mistakenly assumed to be the same service concept. UPT allows complete personal mobility across multiple networks and service providers. PCS may use UPT concepts to improve
subscriber mobility in allowing roaming to different service providers, but UPT and PCS are not the same service concept. Contrast with
Universal Personal Telecommunications (UPT) service.
