PALACE

In English a palace is the home of a head of state or other high-ranking public figure. In some countries, such as Italy, the term is also applied to some private mansions. Many palaces are now put to other uses such as parliaments or museums. The word is also sometimes used to describe a lavish public building which does not house a public figure; this use is intended to convey that the building is a "people's palace", where a sort of civic consciousness resides.

Der Palast ist ein – meist in einer Stadt – erbauter, schlossähnlicher und repräsentativer Prachtbau. Der Begriff "Palast" findet sich in fast allen europäischen Sprachen wieder (z. B. ital. palazzo, franz. palais, engl. palace, span. palacio, poln. palac, nl. paleis) und kann fließend mit den Worten "Schloss" und "Residenz" gleichgesetzt werden.

Pałac (czes. palác, wł. palazzo, łac. palatium), reprezentacyjna budowla mieszkalna pozbawiona cech obronnych, rezydencja; od XIX w. także okazały gmach użyteczności publicznej, zwłaszcza siedziba władz lub instytucji państwowych. W starożytności we wszystkich kręgach kulturowych (Mezopotamia, Egipt, Kreta, Persja) wznoszono budowle typu pałacowego, jedynie w starożytnej Grecji ten typ budowli wykształcił się stosunkowo późno bo w okresie hellenistycznym. Również w starożytnym Rzymie i Bizancjum powstawały okazałe budowle pałacowe. Na Palatynie (łac. mons Palatinus), powstało kilka okazałych pałaców cesarskich. Stąd wzięła się późniejsza nazwa na określanie takich budowli.
