Oxford English Dictionary

The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) is a dictionary published by the Oxford University Press (OUP), and is the most comprehensive dictionary of the English language. It is not the one-volume Oxford Dictionary of English, formerly New Oxford Dictionary of English, of 1998.As of 30 November 2005, the OED included about 301,100 main entries, comprising more than 350 million printed characters. Additional to the headwords of main entries, it has 157,000 combinations and derivatives in bold type, and 169,000 phrases and combinations in bold italic type, a total of 616,500 word-forms. It has 137,000 pronunciations, 249,300 etymologies, 577,000 cross-references, and 2,412,400 illustrative quotations. The latest, complete printed edition of the dictionary (Second Edition, 1989) was 20 volumes, comprising 21,730 pages, with 291,500 entries.

Das Oxford English Dictionary (OED) ist ein sehr umfangreiches englisches Wörterbuch, das den englischen Wortschatz und die Sprachentwicklung des letzten Jahrtausends umfasst. Ähnlich wie das Grimmsche Wörterbuch der deutschen Sprache enthält es sowohl die Etymologie als auch den Gebrauch der Wörter (Betonung, Zitate, Zeitraum des Gebrauchs). Herausgegeben wird das Oxford English Dictionary von Oxford University Press (OUP). Es gibt bereits mehrere gedruckte Ausgaben und eine Online-Ausgabe. Es enthält etwa 600 000 Schlagwörter mit etwa 2,5 Millionen Anwendungsbeispielen in Zitaten. In diesem Wörterbuch wird der Versuch unternommen, soweit wie möglich alle bekannten Verwendungen und Varianten englischer Wörter aufzuzeichnen, beginnend von den frühesten Überlieferungen der englischen Sprache bis in die Gegenwart. An den Ausarbeitungen waren mehrere Generationen von Sprachforschern beteiligt, unter ihnen auch J.R.R. Tolkien und William C. Minor. Das Wörterbuch ist auch online zu erreichen, allerdings nicht kostenlos. Frei verfügbar ist das "Wort des Tages", in dem täglich ein anderes Wort und seine Erklärung zitiert wird.

The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) jest słownikiem wydawnictwa Oxford University Press (OUP), uznawanym za najbardziej wyczerpujący i metodyczny słownik języka angielskiego. Według stanu na 30 listopada 2005 liczył ok. 301 100 haseł głównych (złożonych z ponad 350 milionów znaków drukowanych). W obrębie haseł zawierał 157 000 złożeń i wyrazów pokrewnych podanych drukiem wytłuszczonym i 169 000  związków frazeologicznych podanych wytłuszczoną kursywą, co składało się na 616 500 form wyrazowych. Oprócz tego słownik zawierał 137 000 zapisów wymowy, 249 300  etymologii, 577 000 odsyłaczy i 2 412 400 cytatów ilustrujących użycie wyrazu. Najnowsze pełne wydanie drukowane słownika (Second Edition – druga edycja, 1989) składa się z 21 730 stron, z liczbą 291 500 haseł.

Oxford English Dictionary (OED) è il nome con cui si indica comunemente il New English Dictionary on Historical Principles, monumentale dizionario storico della lingua inglese antica e moderna. Fu promosso dalla Philological Society di Londra nel 1857. Il lavoro di compilazione iniziò a pieno regime nel 1879 sotto l’energica direzione di sir James Murray. Cominciata nel 1884, la pubblicazione si concluse nel 1928 col decimo volume. Nel 1933 ne fu pubblicata una edizione ridotta (Shorter Oxford Dictionary) che ha conosciuto diverse edizioni successive.
