Oxford

Oxford is a city and local government district in Oxfordshire, England, with a population of 134,248 (2001 census). It is home to the University of Oxford, the oldest university in the English-speaking world.It is known as the "city of dreaming spires", a term coined by Matthew Arnold in reference to the harmonious architecture of the university buildings. The River Thames runs through Oxford, where for a distance of some 10 miles it is known as the Isis.The Oxford suburb of Cowley has a long history of carmaking and now produces the BMW MINI.

Oksford (ang. Oxford) – miasto w południowej Anglii, stolica hrabstwa Oxfordshire. Nazwa miasta pochodzi od dwóch słów: ox (wół) i ford (bród); w Oksfordzie – miejscu, gdzie rzeka Cherwell wpada do Tamizy – można było pokonać obie rzeki w bród, najczęściej wozem zaprzęgniętym w woły.Liczba mieszkańców: 149 100 (2006). Położenie geograficzne: 1°15'28" W, 51°45'07" NNajbardziej znane jako siedziba słynnego Uniwersytetu Oksfordzkiego, założonego w połowie XII wieku, który jest najstarszym uniwersytetem w krajach anglojęzycznych; szkoła początkowo utrzymywała się z myta za korzystanie ze wspomnianego wyżej brodu.
