Ottawa (tribe)

The Ottawa (also Odawa, or Odaawaa), meaning "traders," are a Native American and First Nations people. They are related to but distinct from the Ojibwe nation. They lived near the northern shores of Lake Huron. There are approximately 15,000 Ottawa living in Michigan, Ontario, and Oklahoma. The Ottawa language is considered a divergent dialect of the Ojibwe, characterized by frequent syncope. The Ottawa language, like the Ojibwe language, is part of the Algonquian language family.

Les Outaouais (Ottawa en anglais ; autres versions du nom : Odawa, Odaawaa) sont une tribu amérindienne du Canada. Leur nom, qui n'est pas dans leur langue, signifie « marchands ». Du fait que les peuples des Premières Nations ne possédaient pas de langage écrit, le nom Outaouais est une représentation phonétique en français de leur nom. Ils préfèrent s'appeler les Nishnaabe ou Anishinaabe (au pluriel : Nishnaabeg et Anishinaabeg), ce qui veut dire « peuple d'origine ».

Ottawowie (nazwa własna ot'-a-wa, w języku Krików adawe, co oznacza handel), plemię Indian Ameryki Północnej zamieszkujące okolice Wielkich Jezior, głównie brzegi Jeziora Huron od dzisiejszej miejscowości Saginaw do Detroit. W czasach najdawniejszych zajmowali się handlem wymiennym takimi produktami jak kukurydza, olej słonecznikowy, skóry, futra, makaty, tytoń szlachetny oraz zioła lecznicze. Ich język (ottawa lub anishinaabe) należy do języków algonkińskich i spokrewniony jest z językiem odżibwe (ojibwe).
