The Baltic Sea is a brackish mediterranean sea located in Northern Europe, from 53°N to 66°N latitude and from 20°E to 26°E longitude. It is bounded by the Scandinavian Peninsula, the mainland of Europe, and the Danish islands. It drains into the Kattegat by way of the Øresund, the Great Belt and the Little Belt. The Kattegat continues through Skagerrak into the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The Baltic Sea is connected by man-made waterways to the White Sea via the White Sea Canal, and to the North Sea via the Kiel Canal. The Baltic Sea might be considered to be bordered on its northern edge by the Gulf of Bothnia, on its northeastern edge by the Gulf of Finland, and on its eastern edge by the Gulf of Riga. These various gulfs can also be considered part of the Baltic Sea.

Die Ostsee (auch Baltisches Meer genannt, von lat. Mare Balticum) ist ein 413.000 km² großes und bis zu 459 m tiefes Binnenmeer in Europa und gilt als das größte Brackwassermeer der Erde. La Baltique ou mer Baltique est une mer intracontinentale et intérieure de 432 800 km² située dans le nord de l'Europe, et reliée à l'océan Atlantique par la mer du Nord. Deux golfes principaux intègrent cet espace : le golfe de Botnie au nord et le golfe de Finlande à l'est.

Östersjön gränsar politiskt i väster till Danmark och Sverige, i öster till Finland, Ryssland, Estland, Lettland och Litauen, i söder till Polen och Tyskland.

Połączone z Morzem Północnym przez Cieśniny Duńskie (Sund, Mały i Wielki Bełt) oraz Kattegat i Skagerrak. Za zachodnią granicę Bałtyku przyjmuje się cieśninę Sund i próg podwodny ciągnący się na głębokości 18–20 m od przylądka Gedser (wyspa Falster) do przylądka Darßer Ort (Darß).
