OSIRIS is the name of three entirely separate astronomical instruments. The duplication of names is coincidental, partly driven by two scientific teams trying to make acronyms using similar words.

Osiris (; , also Usiris; the Egyptian language name is variously transliterated Asar, Asari, Aser, Ausar, Ausir, Wesir, Usir, Usire or Ausare) is an Egyptian god, usually identified as the god of the afterlife, the underworld and the dead. He is classically depicted as a green-skinned man with a pharaoh's beard, partially mummy-wrapped at the legs, wearing a distinctive crown with two large ostrich feathers at either side, and holding a symbolic crook and flail.

Osiris (übersetzt etwa: „Sitz des Auges”) ist der ägyptische Gott des Jenseits, der Wiedergeburt und der Toten, aber auch der Gott der Vegetation, des Nils und der Fruchtbarkeit. Sein Hauptkultort war Abydos. Er fungiert auch als Bestandteil der Götter-Neunheit von Heliopolis. In den Pyramidentexten galt Osiris als „Gott des Nordens“.

Osiris est le nom grec d'un dieu de la mythologie égyptienne. La traduction de ce nom présente des difficultés et plusieurs hypothèses sont proposées. Ainsi « Ousir », ou « Iousiris », selon une ancienne graphie, a été traduit par « Siège de l'Œil » (du soleil ?), « L'œil puissant », « Celui qui fait son trône » (par allusion à son siège), « Le siège de la puissante » (par référence à la couronne), « Celui qu'elle a remis en fonction » (se rapportant à sa résurrection et à sa nouvelle puissance créatrice, grâce à la magie d'Isis).
